Leaders of Egypt, Turkey Discuss Mideast Peace

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has met with his Turkish counterpart, President Abdullah Gul, to discuss issues including the stalled Middle East peace process.

Egypt’s state-run MENA news agency says the two leaders met Wednesday in Cairo where they talked about efforts to revive peace talks between Israel and Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said he will not negotiate directly with Israel until there is progress on issues including borders, security and Israeli settlement construction. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he wants to move to direct talks.

MENA also says Mr. Mubarak and Mr. Gul talked about ways to promote joint cooperation on economic, trade and investment issues.

The two leaders also attended a military academy graduation ceremony in Cairo, where graduates performed drills as Mr. Mubarak and Mr. Gul looked on. The ceremony included the playing of both the Egyptian and Turkish national anthems.

In December, Mr. Mubarak traveled to Turkey where he met with Mr. Gul and other senior officials. The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
